4,859.61 Nautical Miles for the Maritime career

Hareeshmon K. Shaji was recently visiting home for the first time in a year and a half. His parents live in Kerala, India where he grew up and went to school.

He completed his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at Mahatma Ghandi University. Kerala, a federal state in the south of India, is more socially open than many other parts of the country, one of the reasons why Hareesh enjoyed his time there. For his shipping specialization he decided to leave his home.

He wanted to pursue in his master’s degree. In fall 2019, he began his second phase of training with a master’s degree in Maritime Systems at Wismar University of Applied Sciences. His first career steps took him to renowned companies such as TT Line, where, on the side, he also developed his thesis topic: “Reducing waiting time of vessels in ports” using historic port data and AIS data. Large liners had already found some solutions to this problem, but these did not exist in the bulk carrier business. Oldendorff Carriers showed great interest in the issue and from then on supported him in finalizing his thesis.

During this time, he lived in Rostock and Lübeck and got to know and learn about life in Germany.

After an unsolicited application to NSB, Hareesh received an offer a short time later to come to Buxtehude as a QHSE Assistant, where he has lived ever since. Since March 2023, he has joined the team of six as Engineer QHSE Systems and is responsible for activities such as the identification of potential improvements and definition of optimization possibilities within the department and the execution of the optimization projects considering QHSE requirements throughout the company.
“I love being part of NSB,” says Hareesh. “There isn’t a day when I don’t learn new things about ships and people.”

When he first came to Buxtehude, he felt more like he was in the countryside outside Hamburg than in the city itself. He has since made many friends among his colleagues and does a lot together with them after work and at weekends. “Buxtehude has become my home and I feel comfortable and happy here”.

And we are happy that we have you, Hareesh!
